DNA 2010 Best & Fairest

Last Saturday was the DNA’s best and fairest awards night held at the Mirambeena Resort. Northern Districts centre court utility Liz McCouaig tallied a respectable third in the standings having completed her inaugural DNA season with the club, whilst Marissa Chaplin was in fifth. In a tight finishing countback, Pint’s premiership player and goal shooter Megan Fitzpatrick took home the honors.

The NT News has published an article in today’s newspaper on Megan’s successful season:

Pints’ premiership shooter Megan Fitzpatrick continues to score goals long after the Darwin Netball Association season has wrapped up. Her latest achievement, taking out the DNA best-and-fairest award last week, comes after representing the Territory Storm in the Australian Netball League and winning the DNA premiership in July. Only the last three rounds of the DNA votes were counted on the night, with Fitzpatrick edging out Hoggies captain Shannon Millar. “I was pretty surprised, I polled in all of the last three rounds and so did Shannon so it was pretty close,” Fitzpatrick said.

NT Links Championships Draw to a Close

The 2010 NT Links Netball Championships drew to a close on Sunday evening, culminating with the presentations of the aged division winners and most valuable player awards. Not only was the action hot on court all weekend but Saturday’s games were played in searing heat. Everybody enjoyed a reprieve in the weather on Sunday morning after some overnight rainfall cooled things off.

Following are the results for the Grand Final of each division:
13 & U – Darwin Gold (21) v Palmerston (15)
15 & U – Darwin Gold (23) v Katherine (21)
17 & U – Alice Springs (34) v Darwin Gold (21)
Open – Darwin (42) v Alice Springs (30)

MVP Awards were presented to:
13 & U – Madison Spedding (Darwin Gold)
15 & U – Georgia Walker (Katherine)
17 & U – Teniwa Ford (Alice Springs)
Open – Peta Whelan (Darwin)

The open final was once again between Darwin and Alice Springs, with Darwin determined to gain reprieve from last years defeat at the hands of Alice. In the first quarter Darwin started slowly and trailed Alice Springs into the break by 8 goals. Persistence paid dividends in the second quarter as Darwin pegged back Alice to have everything tied by the major interval. Excellent transfer of the ball into the attacking third as well as relentless defensive pressure across the entire court saw Darwin gain the upper hand in the second half. Darwin’s lead was just short of a baker’s dozen at the final whistle having maintained their intensity winning by 12 goals. Congratulations to Peta Whelan for her best and fairest performance.

Congratulations must also go to umpire Elice Crisp who was awarded her B badge at the championships. Excellent work and very deserved Elice!

Be a Netball Mentor!

Online Netball Mentor CourseNetball Australia in conjunction with the Australian Sports Commission is pleased to launch an online mentoring course for coaches, umpires and officials.

Mentoring is a highly effective way for coaches, umpires and officials to learn the ‘art’ of their role, and apply theory that they may have learnt in a classroom or through independent study.  Mentoring relationships can be formally structured, with mentors assigned to officials, or they can grow out of a chance encounter with a like-minded person and remain very informal.

The course has seven modules covering the following topics:

  • How mentoring works
  • Know yourself as a mentor
  • Initial meeting
  • Know your mentee
  • Giving Feedback
  • Improving Performance
  • Conflict/Challenging Situations

Mentoring is not new, but it is effective. Skilling mentors in their role can only enhance the mentee’s experience. Being able to provide quality feedback in a manner that empowers the mentee and allows them to develop in their own time and style is a skill that mentors need to have.
